It is always important to remember that when working with wood, like carving, safety should be given priority. This includes using a protective mask and eyewear to avoid potential injury. Sawdust coming form MDF is dangerous to the lungs when inhaled. As such, it is important to protect your mouth and eyes to avoid these possible risks.

When dealing with MDF, it is also recommended to work in a well-ventilated area. There is also a mask that is especially designed to offer extra protection, and with the capability to filter even the finest MDF particles.

It is also recommended to invest in other protective gears, including a thumb guard and a protective glove. A thumb guard provides protection to the thumb when performing some cuts while the thumb is exposed. A quality glove is usually made out of a thick material which provides protection against cutting while using the carving knife.

Step 2: Choose the Right Tools

When it comes to carving, there is a wide range of carving tools that you can choose from. You may want to start with a carving knife that comes with a few gouges, along with a sharpening tool. After gathering together all the basic tools, you can now start your project. As your skill increases, you will be able to get more familiar with the different tools for these types of projects. Getting yourself familiar with your tools will make the entire process easier, as you can now carve even with techniques that are more advanced.

Step 3: Master the Basic Cuts

A good woodcarver usually focuses on improving his/her skills in performing the most basic woodcarving cuts. This includes the stop cut, sweeping cut, pyramid cut and the V-cut. Let us take a look at each of them:

  • Stop Cut

To perform the stop cut, begin by creating a straight cut into the wood, and then stopping. This will allow you to continue cutting by bringing the knife to the cut you have previously created from below. With this type of cut, you can make either small or big and controlled cuts, peeling the wood off that you accurately require.

  • Sweep Cut

The sweep cut can be done by pushing the knife in, bringing it upward and out in a single, sweeping movement. This type of cut may be used in slowly peeling the wood in smaller areas into pieces.

  • Pyramid Cut

To achieve a pyramid cut, you can start by drawing a triangle, then holding the knife similar to the way you would hold a pencil, poking it in the area that is marked. Follow the marks, poking all of the areas until the piece of wood starts to come out.

  • V-Cut

A V-cut is achieved by cutting in a 45-degree angle into the wood, cutting from above coming from the other side, thus forming a V. This type of cutting method is ideal for shaping the wood up in the specific shape and figure that you wish.

Step 4: Learn to Use the Dremel

One important tool that you will encounter along the way is a Dremel. When using this tool in carving lines into the MDF, it is important to avoid going in too deep while making quick passes into the wood. This will help avoid chamfering. You may need to continue doing it a few more times to get yourself familiar with the technique, which is why it is important to continue practicing until you become used to it.

Chamfering usually happens when the bit of the Dremel gets stuck into the wood, causing it to jump back. This may result to major injury if you do not know about it. Make sure that you are familiar with how to use a Dremel in a proper way especially for carving wood.

Step 5: Keep Practicing!

Just with any other skill, it is very important to spend a good amount of time in learning the basics.  You can start any project and improve your skills along the way. Continue practicing the basics up to the point that you become comfortable with the movements.

Begin with smaller wood blocks to practice on using your carving equipment. Once you know how to use the carving knife, and the Dremel, you will become more familiar with how they actually work, and how the needed shape can be carved into the wood. You are now ready to start with proper carving.

As you are practicing and improving your skills, do not forget to enjoy the entire procedure, including the learning process. The more practice you do, the more projects you accomplish, the better you will be at it. You can even work on experimenting with both manual and power tools, and determine which tools work best for you.

Conclusion

How easy is MDF to carve? It is relatively easy, thanks to its low density. It features a soft surface, making it easy to carve using both power and manual tools. Unlike other wood types, MDF is not too hard, thus it makes carving manageable. A benefit that you can expect when carving using MDF is that it allows you to carve on small details more easily than other types of wood. Why? Because there is no need to worry about going against the grain, allowing you to carve on any wood area without any problem.
